Speaking from the White House on Thursday, U.S. President Joe Biden warned that the country is facing "dangerous and threatening" storms in the days before Christmas. Biden also urged Americans who plan to travel to visit family or friends to leave right away.

“Please take this storm extremely seriously and I don’t know if your boss will let you, but if you have travel plans, leave now. Not a joke,” Biden said. “It’s not life and death — but it will be if they don’t get out. They may not get out.”

A massive storm system is expected to bring blizzard conditions to the Great Lakes region, up to 5 cm of rain, followed by a flash freeze on the East Coast, and wind gusts of 100 km/h, and bitter cold as far south as the Mexican border.

As the storm moves over the Great Lakes, a weather phenomenon known as a bomb cyclone is expected to develop due to "the abrupt deepening of this low-pressure system," according to the National Weather Service. In its wake, the cyclone could spawn snowfalls of a half inch an hour and winds of more than 80 km/h in the Upper Midwest and interior Northeast, the weather service said.
