The United States will push the UN Security Council to "update and strengthen" international sanctions on North Korea over its "increasingly dangerous provocations," the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, said on Friday.

North Korea conducted what is thought to be its largest intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) test ever on Thursday, the South Korean and Japanese militaries said.

"The United States absolutely condemns the DPRK intercontinental ballistic missile launch on March 24th. This launch violated multiple security council resolutions. It was an egregious, unprovoked escalation," the U.S. ambassador said.

"Now is not the time to end our sanctions. Now is the time to enforce them. The United States calls on all member states to fully implement the existing Security Council resolutions. And because of DPRK's increasingly dangerous provocations, the United States will be introducing a Chapter VII Security Council resolution to update and strengthen the sanctions regime," Thomas-Greenfield said.

North Korea's latest launch was the Hwasong-17, a huge new intercontinental ballistic missile, in a test that leader Kim Jong Un said was designed to demonstrate the might of its nuclear force and deter any U.S. military moves.
