Former U.S. president Barack Obama warned Tuesday evening, in the wake of the hammer attack on the husband of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, that unless the U.S. political climate changes “more people are going to get hurt.”

David DePape, 42, has pleaded not guilty to attempted murder and a host of other charges in connection with the attack on Paul Pelosi.

Obama made the comments at a campaign rally for Democratic candidates in Las Vegas, Nev.

Obama expressed grave concern at “this erosion of basic civility and democratic norms” in the country after supporters of former president Donald Trump stormed the US Capitol in an attempt to overturn the 2020 election results.

“This increasing habit of demonizing political opponents creates a dangerous climate,” he said, faulting elected officials who he said inflamed the situation with heated rhetoric. He also pointed to celebrities such as Kanye West, who he said have contributed to the “dangerous climate” by posting anti-semitic comments on social media.
