Pentagon press secretary Brig.-Gen. Pat Ryder confirmed on Friday that U.S. forces launched airstrikes on sites in Syria used by groups affiliated with Iran's Revolutionary Guard (IRGC) in retaliation to an American contractor being killed by a suspected Iranian-made drone in Syria on Thursday.

Ryder said two IRGC-affiliated facilities were struck and that initial assessments are both facilities were destroyed. He also confirmed that in response to the strikes by U.S. forces, 10 rockets targeted coalition forces at Green Village in northeastern Syria, but said there were no injuries and no damage to equipment.

Asked by reporters if there were concerns if the strikes by both the U.S. and Syria showed signs of escalation in the region, Ryder said the focus in Syria is on the "defeat ISIS mission," and they seek neither conflict or escalation with Iran. But he said the strikes were intended "to send a very clear message we will take the protection of our personnel seriously and we will respond quickly and decisively if they are threatened."
