Victims and the families of those impacted by gun violence testified before U.S. Congress on Wednesday following the mass shootings in Uvalde, Texas and Buffalo, N.Y. last month.

An 11-year-old girl who survived the mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, recounted in video testimony how she covered herself with a dead classmate’s blood to avoid being shot and “just stayed quiet.” In the video, Miah’s father, Miguel Cerillo, asks his daughter if she feels safe at school anymore. She shook her head no. “Why?” he asked. “I don’t want it to happen again,” she responded.

Kimberly Mata-Rubio recounted how she and her husband had attended an award ceremony for her daughter Lexi just hours before she was killed in the mass shooting in Uvalde.

"To celebrate we promised to get her ice cream that evening. We told her we loved her and we would pick her up after school. I left my daughter at school and that decision will haunt me for the rest of my life. We seek to raise the age to purchase these weapons from 18 to 21 years of age, we seek red-flag laws, stronger background checks. We also want to repeal gun manufacturers' liability and immunity," Mata-Rubio said.

Lucretia Hughes, a conservative activist for the right-wing group Turning Point USA, also testified. Hughes, whose son was killed in 2016 by a convicted felon with an illegally obtained firearm, argued against gun control laws, described them as "steeped in racism," and said those advocating for them are "delusional."

Democrats in the U.S. Senate said on Tuesday they were encouraged by talks with Republicans on firearms legislation, but warned that any compromise would fall well short of all the steps they say are needed to curb gun violence.

The Senate's top Republican, Mitch McConnell, said he hoped the two sides would find common ground after a wave of mass shootings.
