The United States is facing new political battles a day after a government shutdown was averted.

Some hard-right Republicans are intent on removing the speaker of the House of Representatives, Kevin McCarthy, accusing him of bowing to Democrat pressure.

President Joe Biden has welcomed the 45-day stop-gap bill to avert a shutdown but is frustrated with the infighting in Congress.
