Kirsten Hillman, Ambassador of Canada to the United States, joins Global's Dawna Friesen to offer her insight as the votes continue to be counted in the 2020 U.S. election, and explain why the outcome of the election matters so much to Canadians.

Specifically, Hillman addressed concerns that no matter who wins, it's possible Canada will be facing a degree of protectionism from the United States over the next four years.

Republican President Donald Trump is squaring off against Democratic challenger and former vice-president Joe Biden in the 2020 U.S. Presidental Election. By Saturday, more than 90 million Americans had already voted, according to a tally from the U.S. Elections Project.

As the first polls closed at 6 p.m. ET, each candidate was awarded a predictable win. Trump took Kentucky while Biden secured Vermont, giving Biden three electoral wins and Trump eight.

The second round of polls closed at 7 p.m. ET, with Trump taking West Virginia and South Carolina — both are also reliably conservative states. He takes five and nine electoral votes, respectively. Biden won the state of Virginia, taking its 13 electoral votes.
