Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell spoke Tuesday after most major news organizations predicted he would win re-election in Kentucky, saying that the state had decided to “keep our front row seat” in the U.S. Senate by re-electing him.

The 78-year-old McConnell defeated Democrat Amy McGrath, a retired Marine combat pilot who challenged him as a political outsider.

McConnell is the longest-serving Republican leader in Senate history.

He said Tuesday evening that while it was not yet clear which party would ultimately control the Senate or who the president will be, grave challenges lie ahead that will require the next president to “unite the country.”

As President Donald Trump’s top ally on Capitol Hill, McConnell led efforts to defend the president during his impeachment acquittal in the Senate. He also worked with Trump on a tax overhaul and orchestrated Senate confirmation of more than 200 judicial appointments, including Amy Coney Barrett, to the Supreme Court.
