Kamala Harris is set to become the first woman, the first person of colour and of South Asian descent to be elected vice-president of the United States.

Harris, 56, who served as a California Senator since 2017 and as an Attorney General for the state of California since 2010, is now heading to the White House with president-elect Joe Biden.

The role of vice president is often seen as symbolic more than substantive, but as the first female after 48 male vice presidents, the symbolism will carry the weight of expectation and history. Eric Sorensen shows how Harris is making history with this win.
