U.S. president-elect Joe Biden on Wednesday nominated his former Democratic rival Pete Buttigieg to serve his administration’s Secretary of Transportation during a briefing in Wilmington, Del.

The appointment of Buttigeg, the former mayor of South Bend, Indiana, marks the first-ever appointment of an openly gay man to a federal cabinet-level post in U.S. history.

Buttigieg responded to the selection, stating there's "a lot at stake" for newer generations when it comes to infrastructure policy.

This briefing comes days after Biden's election victory was solidified by the official vote of the electoral college voters.
