The ongoing situation in Kazakhstan will be a key sticking point during top level talks between the U.S. and Russia that begin Monday.
But the biggest talking point will be Russia’s threat against Ukraine and how Russian President Vladimir Putin is amassing troops along the border.
There is also a litany of festering but largely unrelated disputes, ranging from arms control to cybercrime and diplomatic issues, for Washington and Moscow to overcome if tensions are to ease.
