The U.S. State Department on Thursday "welcomed" the Taliban’s cooperation after a flight carrying U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents and others took off from Kabul to Doha and said it expected additional such opportunities for people to leave Afghanistan by air or possibly other means.

State Department spokesman Ned Price told reporters that the United States had told Taliban officials "additional steps such as these will be well received by the international community."

He declined to say how many U.S. citizens were on the flight, saying the U.S. government had invited 30 Americans and lawful permanent residents to take the flight but not all had accepted.

Price confirmed that the first international commercial flight since the end of last month's chaotic Western airlift from Afghanistan left Kabul airport on Thursday with more than 100 passengers on board, and arrived in Doha, Qatar.

Although international flights have flown in and out with officials, technicians and aid in recent days, this was the first such civilian flight since the hectic evacuation of 124,000 foreigners and at-risk Afghans that followed the Taliban's seizure of the capital on Aug. 15.
