United Nations officials warned Friday that the ongoing war in Ukraine was threatening to create a hunger crisis not only in the war-torn country, but around the world.

It has been 100 days since Russia invaded Ukraine, with UN crisis coordinator Amin Awad saying there were at least 15.7 million people in Ukraine in need of assistance and protection. The conflict has also fueled surging prices for grains, cooking oils, fuel, and fertilizer globally. Russia and Ukraine account for nearly a third of global wheat supplies, while Russia is also a key exporter of fertilizer, while Ukraine is a major supplier of corn and sunflower oil.

Awad said more negotiations were needed to unblock trade through the Black Sea as a failure to do so will result "in famine, destabilization and mass migration around the world."
