UN report: Thai banks enable Myanmar military purchases, urged to stop aiding army

In Bangkok, a parliamentary committee meeting appeared indifferent as the UN Special Rapporteur briefed Thailand's largest banks on their role in facilitating Myanmar military transactions, which totalled over $120 million last year. The report highlighted Thai banks' increasing involvement in funding Myanmar's military activities, including weapon sales, prompting defensive responses from banking officials. Despite assertions of legality, the rapporteur emphasised the need for greater scrutiny to prevent military financing through indirect means.
