The United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for an end to hostilities in Ethiopia’s Tigray region and a return to peace talks on Monday, adding that “The situation in Ethiopia is spiralling out of control.”
“Violence and destruction have reached alarming levels,” he continued, a day after the African Union had called for an immediate ceasefire.
Guterres said the UN was ready to support the African Union in every way possible to end the “nightmare” for Ethiopian people, noting that “civilians are paying a horrific price” amid indiscriminate attacks and reported sexual violence.
On Monday, fighting continued in the region as sources said Ethiopian government forces captured one of the biggest cities in the northern Tigray region.
