The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights called for a transparent investigation on Friday into reports of poison attacks on school girls in Iran and for the perpetrators to be punished.

"The authorities have said that they have ordered an investigation into these incidents. But we do urge that such investigations should be transparent, and the findings should be made public to bring the perpetrators to justice,” Ravina Shamdasani, spokesperson for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, told reporters in Geneva.

“We're very concerned about these allegations that girls are being deliberately targeted under what appear to be mysterious circumstances."

Hundreds of Iranian girls in different schools have suffered "mild poison" attacks over recent months, according to the country's health minister, with some politicians suggesting they could have been targeted by religious groups opposed to girls' education.
