Ultra-processed foods, such as ready-to-eat meat, fizzy drinks and sugary cereals, are linked to a higher risk of early death, a new study has found.

So, what are ultra-processed foods? Such foods encompass a wide range of products, including packaged baked goods, candy, chips, sweetened drinks, bacon and hot dogs – items that are laden with additives, sugars and unhealthy fats and lacking in essential nutrients.

In Canada, our consumption of such foods is on the rise.
