British Prime Minister Boris Johnson paid tribute to lawmaker David Amess who was stabbed to death at a constituency meeting in a church on Friday, saying he was a fine public servant and much-loved friend and colleague.

Calling Amess "one of the nicest, kindest, most gentle people in politics," Johnson expressed his shock and sadness, saying his thoughts were with Amess's wife and family.

Amess, 69, from Johnson's Conservative Party, was attacked at about midday in the red-brick Belfairs Methodist Church in Leigh-on-Sea, east of London.

Essex police confirmed that a 25-year-old man was arrested and remains in custody on suspicion of murder.

"It will be for investigators to determine whether or not this may have been a terrorist incident. As always they will keep an open mind," Essex Police Chief Constable Ben-Julian Harrington told reporters.
