President Volodymyr Zelenskyy marked Ukraine’s Defenders Day on Friday by promising victory over Russia. In a video address delivered outside the capital of Kyiv, Zelenskyy thanked Ukraine’s forces for defending the country.

But as Russia’s war of aggression in Ukraine rages on, that country has paid a terrible price. Russian airstrikes have intensified, hitting energy facilities and apartment blocks.

Russia’s invasion has killed thousands, displaced millions and pulverized Ukrainian cities.

As Crystal Goomansingh reports, today Ukrainians reflected on the collective fight for freedom.
