Ruined buildings and vehicles, torn uniforms and discarded ammunition were scattered across Lyman in Ukraine’s Donetsk region, after Ukraine forced Russia out of the city.

The recapturing of Lyman was part of a counteroffensive that has reclaimed parts of Donetsk after Russian President Vladimir Putin proclaimed its annexation alongside three other Ukrainian regions. Putin signed laws formally absorbing the four Ukrainian regions on Wednesday morning.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced Sunday that the town, which had been occupied by pro-Russian forces since late May, had been retaken.

Russia has faced mounting setbacks, with Ukrainian forces retaking more and more land in the east and in the south. Russia has vowed to defend its territory — which it says includes the newly annexed regions — with any means at its disposal, including nuclear weapons.
