German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said Tuesday that Germany has taken steps to halt the process of certifying the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline from Russia. He told reporters in Berlin that his government was taking the measure in response to Russia's actions in Ukraine.
The UK announced sanctions against five Russian banks and three "very high-net worth individuals" including oligarch Gennady Timchenko, who Prime Minister Boris Johnson called out by name before Parliament.
The presidents of the European Council and the European Commission, Charles Michel and Ursula von der Leyen, said that a meeting of EU foreign ministers will take place today at 4 p.m. (1500 GMT) where a package of sanctions against Russia will be decided.
Meanwhile, the Russian Duma and self-proclaimed republics of Luhansk and Donetsk have ratified friendship treaties.
