Speaking in St Petersburg, Russian President Vladimir Putin said the country's "heroic" soldiers and militia were carrying out their objectives in Ukraine and have "prevented a real threat to our motherland".

Addressing his parliamentary colleagues he said plans to "strangle us economically have failed" and that their reaction to "Kyiv's regime" was "timely and correct".
