Some Ukrainian soldiers joined other worshippers on Sunday to attend a Christmas morning mass in Kharkiv as the war with Russia continued.

In the past, Ukrainian Christians mostly celebrated Christmas in early January, but this year it's being observed by many on Dec. 25 after Ukraine's main Orthodox Church broke with Moscow.

Ruslan, a territorial defence member, said it was a "particularly significant date" with the war going on.

"It is hard to understand that you are celebrating somewhere under shelling, not at home," he said.
Maryna Sokolova, meanwhile, was preparing a meal in her home in Kharkiv alongside her husband Vitalii Hudskyi and their children as her father, Leonid Onyshchenko fought in Donetsk. She said this Christmas was difficult as not only was her father fighting, but several members of her family including her eldest children had fled to Lviv.
