The United Kingdom's governing Conservative Party has scored a significant election victory in a town that has traditionally been a stronghold of its main opponent.
The Conservatives decisively won the vacant parliamentary seat of Hartlepool.
It has been held by the opposition Labour Party for more than 50 years.
