UK Lenders told to uphold free speech after allegations of blacklisting clients over political views

The Government has asked for a review of the rules on Politically Exposed People after some campaigners claimed they had been stopped from opening accounts with certain banks.

Banks have said they do not consider the political affiliations of the account holder.

The Treasury said it was already looking into whether banks were being too rigorous in how they handle PEPs, and making sure UK-based politicians were treated as less risky than those in other countries.
