Countries around Europe are again tightening restrictions as coronavirus infection rates rising during the holiday season.
In the United Kingdom, the government says a new variant of the novel coronavirus which it has identified could be linked to the rapid rise in cases.
London and some surrounding areas are due to be placed on the highest level of COVID-19 restrictions.
The Netherlands and Germany have announced new nationwide lockdowns while Italy is debating whether to put in place tougher measures.
Workers in Paris have protested against the curbs.
