Experts are warning of a “humanitarian crisis” in the U.K. this winter, with households faced with soaring energy bills caused by rising inflation, post-COVID energy demand and the war in Ukraine.

“I was talking to one woman and she said she’s having to give her house up and everything because she can’t afford to run it,” said one woman Sunday who spoke to Global News about the situation in U.K., which is becoming increasingly dire for low-income households.

The spiking global market for natural gas is driving up U.K. utility bills from $2,000 a year for the average home, to nearly $8,000 by next spring.

Redmond Shannon reports on the steps the government is taking to ease the pain, and why experts say it is nowhere near enough to help the country’s poorest residents.
