UK car industry sees surge in sales to Azerbaijan following sanctions on Russia | War in Ukraine

The British car industry sent another £40 million of cars to Azerbaijan in the first month of 2024, raising fresh questions about whether those vehicles are being sent there to circumvent sanctions on Russia.

New data from HMRC shows that direct car exports to Russia remain at zero, where they have been since the imposition of sanctions in 2022 - but in January £43 million worth of cars were sent to Russia's neighbour Azerbaijan.

The UK's Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders has insisted the unprecedented 2,000% increase has nothing to with Russia and is evidence the former Soviet state has a "flourishing market in its own right".
