An investigation has been launched into how British Prime Minister Boris Johnson funded renovations to his apartment in Downing Street.
The Electoral Commission, the UK's political spending watchdog, says it has reasonable grounds to suspect an offence may have been committed. It follows weeks of allegations of government cronyism.
It has been alleged that Johnson first tried to get wealthy supporters to pay for the work, then that his political party loaned him the money. If so, that should have been made public.
Johnson owes much of his political success to a Teflon-like quality, surviving controversies that would have torpedoed the careers of lesser contemporary politicians.
Al Jazeera's Paul Brennan reports from London, UK.
