The brother of Tyre Nichols, the 29-year-old who died after a violent traffic stop in Memphis, Tenn., spoke Tuesday ahead of the funeral, along with other family members and community leaders.

Nichols' death has sparked outrage across the U.S. and renewed calls for police reform. But Jamal Dupree, said his brother “would want us to do this peacefully.”

He also expressed frustration that he wasn’t there to protect his brother, saying: “The one fight that I needed to be at, I wasn’t here.”

Nichols' funeral comes after two more Memphis police officers were disciplined and three emergency responders fired in connection with his death. Officer Preston Hemphill, who is white, was relieved of duty shortly after Nichols' Jan. 7 arrest, the police department announced.

Five Black officers who had previously been fired were charged last week with second-degree murder and other offenses in Nichols' beating and Jan. 10 death.

Also Monday, Memphis Fire Department officials announced the dismissal of emergency medical technicians Robert Long and JaMichael Sandridge and Lt. Michelle Whitaker.
