United Nations spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric commented Friday about the suspension of several journalists on Twitter, saying it sets a "dangerous precedent." He added that media voices should not be silenced on a platform that says it gives space to freedom of speech.

"We're very disturbed by the arbitrary suspension of accounts of journalists that we saw on Twitter," he said. "The move sets a dangerous precedent at a time when journalists all over the world are facing censorship, physical threats, and even worse."

Twitter owner Elon Musk has defended the actions, tweeting rules banning the publishing of personal information applied to all. A day earlier, the social media company suspended @elonjet, an account that was tracking Musk's private jet in real-time. Musk threatened legal action against the account operator after saying his son had been mistakenly followed by a "crazy stalker."

Musk had tweeted Thursday that there would be a seven-day suspension for doxxing, but it was not clear if some of the accounts suspended had commented on or shared news about @elonjet.
