During a Wednesday address to his AK Party, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan called for a ceasefire in the Middle East and said Israel’s bombardment of Gaza amounts to a “mental illness.”

Erdogan accused Western powers of “fraud,” adding that countries who say Israel has a right to defend itself should also condemn the worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

He also called on all countries to avoid provoking further conflict and warned against approaching it as a conflict between two faiths.

Turkey backs a two-state solution to the decades-long Israel-Palestinian conflict and hosts members of the militant group Hamas. Ankara has recently toughened its state against Israel as the humanitarian situation in Gaza has intensified.
