Former U.S. president Donald Trump made his appearance at a National Rifle Association (NRA) convention despite other notable speakers dropping out and calls for the event to be cancelled or postponed in the wake of the mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas on Tuesday.

Trump took a jab at Texas Gov. Greg Abbott who dropped out of the event by saying, "Unlike some, I didn't disappoint you by not showing up."

Others who dropped out included Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick and "American Pie" singer Don MacLean.

The 45th president went on to discuss what the U.S. should do, saying more money should be spent on protecting schools.

"We need to expand recruiting, funding and training for police departments nationwide. This is not a matter of money, this is a matter of will. If the United States has $40 billion to send to Ukraine we should be able to do whatever it takes to keep our children safe at home," Trump said.
