Speaking at the White House briefing on Monday, U.S. White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre and Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas urged the country to “come together and lower the temperature” in the aftermath of a shooting at a rally for Donald Trump in Butler, Pa., on Saturday.

“There's no place in America for this kind of violence ever. We cannot normalize this right now. The most important thing we can do is unite against this type of political violence and reject it. That's what the president is going to focus on,” Jean-Pierre said.

Mayorkas said that in light of the weekend’s events, U.S. President Joe Biden has directed the Secret Service to enhance protection for Trump as well as Robert Kennedy Jr. and Trump’s newly-announced running mate JD Vance. Mayorkas added that this will include additional personnel, protective resources, screening technology and tactical support at the Republican National Convention (RNC).

He also said that an independent review of the incident will be conducted to examine the Secret Service’s and other law enforcement’s actions before, during and after the shooting. Mayorkas added that the Biden administration was in the process of selecting who will lead the independent review and that the findings will be made public for transparency.
