It was a day of both legal wins and setbacks for Donald Trump on Monday, after a court date was set for April 15 in his criminal trial on charges tied to hush money paid to former adult film actor Stormy Daniels.

The date all but ensures Trump will become the first U.S. president to face a criminal trial.

The former president said that setting the trial in the midst of an election campaign was “not fair” and accused the judge who set the trial date of trying to “damage” him ahead of the U.S. presidential election.

On the same day, Trump won a bid to pause his $454-million civil fraud judgment if he posts a similar $175-million bond within 10 days, which would block New York State authorities from taking steps to seize his assets as long as he posts bond by the new deadline.

The decision by a mid-level state appeals court eases an acute cash crunch for Trump, who claims he would be forced to sell his assets at “fire sale prices” to post bond in the case.
