Trudeau calls Hockey Canada CEO, board resignations “important first step”

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau responded on Tuesday to the resignation of Hockey Canada’s CEO and board of directors, calling it an “important first step” when it comes to restoring confidence in the organization.

“There’s work to do to transform the culture at Hockey Canada, but today was an important first step,” he said.

Hockey Canada announced the departures after months of mounting calls for leadership changes within the body and following the departure of several of its major sponsors.

An interim management committee will run the organization until a new CEO is appointed. The organization says it will ask its members to vote for a new slate of directors ahead of the upcoming virtual election on Dec. 17.

Trudeau also spoke about his upcoming testimony at a public inquiry into the government’s use of the Emergencies Act to put an end to the so-called "Freedom Convoy" protests, saying he “is very much looking forward” to it.
