A transgender candidate in Mexico's legislative elections is looking to break ground and confront worsening violence against their community.

Left-leaning Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador is poised to see his party strengthen state control in Sunday's mid-term elections. Within his coalition is deputy candidate, Maria Clemente García Moreno. She is seeking to become the first trans woman in Mexican Congress.

In data compiled from 2019, 117 people from the LGBTQ+ community were killed in Mexico, up almost a third compared from 2018, and the highest since 2015, according to a local advocacy group.
