Top UN humanitarian official visits worst-damaged areas in Gaza, discusses aid efforts

After touring some of the areas in Gaza that were hardest hit by 11 days of fighting between Israel and Hamas, the top United Nations aid official in the region, Lynn Hastings, appealed on Saturday for both sides to observe a ceasefire while aid teams start to assess and repair the damage.

Hastings visited sites of destruction on Wehda Street - meaning Unity Street - where Palestinian health officials said Israeli airstrikes killed 42 people, including 22 members of one family.

"I have been speaking to the families here and what they all said is that they have no hope, they feel that they have no control of their lives and their situation is, one woman said, helpless," Hastings said.

After mediation efforts that also involved the UN, Egypt secured a halt on Friday to the fiercest cross-border shelling in years between Israel and Hamas-led Palestinian fighters who control the enclave.

Hastings said suitable mechanisms were already in place and had been active since a war of 2014, and that the UN and other relief agencies, including NGOs, would pool and prioritize resources.
