Angela Merkel’s former foreign policy advisor speaks out on Gaza, Russia’s war on Ukraine, and the future of NATO. Christoph Heusgen urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to “finally” agree to a ceasefire in Gaza, saying “So many thousands of children have already been killed.” He added, “We'll see what Israel does to prevent a genocide.”

After Donald Trump’s threats aimed at NATO allies over defense spending, Christoph Heusgen said “Donald Trump has a point,” underlining that Germany and other NATO members had long underinvested in their militaries. He said European NATO members must catch up, and called on Germany and Britain to enter discussions with France about strengthening nuclear deterrence in Europe with a “complementary” nuclear shield.
