Police are investigating after 23-month-old Everett Smith was found dead in a Bancroft, Ont., car on June 23.

Police found a child without vital signs. Paramedics transported the toddler to hospital and, shortly after, he was pronounced dead, police said, despite several attempts to resuscitate him.

Paul Jenkins, the Mayor of Bancroft, told Global News the deceased child was part of a family he had known for 30 years.

Jenkins said the mother meant to drop Everett off at daycare in the morning, but accidentally left him in the car while she went to work at North Hastings High School.

Jenkins said the child’s parents – Dianna and Jason Smith – in partnership with North Hastings Children’s Services, have launched the Everett Smith Memorial Fund.

Global’s Megan King reports on the tragedy.
