he Ethiopian Prime Minister, Abiy Ahmed, has launched an assault on the city of Mekelle, the regional capital of Tigray amid calls from the international community to protect civilians. The prime minister said great care would be taken to protect around half a million people who live in the city. The attack comes after 3 weeks of fighting between federal and regional forces. UK Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab has said the conflict with Tigray is a “deeply concerning situation”, and the UN have warned of possible war crimes if the city is attacked. Across the border in Sudan, nearly 50,000 people have sought refuge.
But the BBC has seen troops along the border who are now reportedly stopping more people from fleeing the conflict.
