The EU has condemned the arrest of Georgia's main opposition party leader Nika Melia as thousands of demonstrators rallied against his detention in the capital, Tbilisi.
Melia was detained on Tuesday morning, days after the prime minister resigned after expressing concerns about a crackdown on the opposition.
Melia is accused of leading anti-government protests that turned violent in the summer of 2019.
Georgia has been in a political crisis since last October’s parliamentary elections, which opposition parties have denounced as rigged.

Al Jazeera’s Robin Forestier Walker reports from Tbilisi, Georgia.
