Driven by the Omicron variant, the number of new COVID-19 infections in India rose to more than 260,000 in the past 24 hours.
However, despite surging cases, hundreds of thousands of Hindu pilgrims gathered for a religious festival.
There are fears the gathering could be a so-called "super-spreader" event.
