From a severe drought to wildfires that destroyed hundreds of homes and killed dozens in January, to the torrential floods last week that have forced evacuations across the country, Chile has been reeling from extreme weather in 2023.
Impacted simultaneously by all the conditions is the nation’s beekeeping industry.
Not only did the floods kill thousands of bee colonies, but they also ruined mass supplies of honey, leaving workers with little to nothing to show.
On Wednesday, the president of the National Beekeeping Movement Mario Flores called upon the Chilean government to come to the “immediate” aid of the industry and its workers.
