Thousands of university students and teachers marched in Athens, Greece on Thursday against government education reforms that include a proposed police force for university campuses.

The protesters, wearing face masks, defied a 100 person limit on demonstrations as part of measures to combat the novel coronavirus, with police estimates putting attendance at around 4,000 people.

Police did not intervene and the protest ended peacefully. Officers did however appeal to demonstrators to social distance as scores marched side by side with their arms locked.

Students are opposed to government measures that will place unarmed security guards on campuses for the first time after various acts of violence, including an incident last year where a group stormed and vandalized the office of a university dean and forced him to hang a sign around his neck.

In 2019, the conservative government scrapped a controversial university asylum law that prohibited police from entering universities. Critics said the government's move infringed on democracy.
