Emma Corrin, best known for playing Princess Diana in Netflix’s The Crown, has called for the best female and best male categories at major film awards to be merged into a single, gender-free one.
"I don't think the categories are inclusive enough at the moment,” said the 26-year-old, who identifies as non-binary and uses they/them pronouns.
"When it comes to categories, do we need to make it specific as to whether you're being nominated for a female role or a male role?” they said.
Only a few film awards have eliminated gender-specific acting categories, however the Baftas and Oscars have both indicated they are in discussions about making a single category.
