The government says it is working behind the scenes to ensure that Thames Water customers won't be impacted as rumours circulated today that the company, which is £14bn in debt, is on the verge of going bust.

The company - the UK's biggest water supplier - is looking to raise cash from investors.

Meanwhile the Chancellor was meeting regulators from various industries - including water - to see what could be done about lowering prices.
