Thailand's Senate officially passed a landmark marriage equality law on Tuesday, making it the first Southeast Asian country to recognize same-sex marriage. After more than two decades of advocacy from activists and politicians, the bill has finally been approved, marking a significant step forward for equality and LGBTQ+ rights in the region.

"As an 18-year-old non-binary youth, this is an important step for society; and for our (future) children, we are very proud to make history today where love triumphed over prejudice,"Plaifah Kyoka Shodladd from the Same-Sex Marriage Bill Drafting Committee said.

"We have support from the parliament, from the senators who passed this law. That means we are protected by law," said lesbian feminist and human rights defender Matcha Phornin, adding that the couple will now be able to adopt their daughter legally.

The law, which has the support of nearly all lawmakers in the upper house, next needs royal approval. It will come into force 120 days after it is published in the Royal Gazette.
