Groups of opposing protesters gathered outside the U.S. Supreme Court on Monday as it heard arguments related to a near-total ban on abortion in Texas.

The court is weighing whether Texas state courts should be barred from hearing cases brought against abortion providers under the law that also lets private citizens enforce it.

The most recent Gallup poll shows Americans are split on the issue of abortion, with 47 per cent who think it is morally acceptable and 46 per cent who believe it is morally wrong.

Fourty-eight per cent said they want abortion to remain legal, but with limits. Another 32 per cent said it should be completely legal and 19 per cent said it should be illegal.

The Texas dispute reached the Supreme Court with unusual speed. The justices agreed to take up the matter on Oct. 22, bypassing lower courts that are considering challenges.

The challenges will determine whether federal courts can hear lawsuits aimed at striking down the Texas law and whether the U.S. government can even sue to try to block it. If the justices keep federal courts out of the process by virtue of the law’s unique design, it could be replicated in other states and curtail abortion access across parts of the country.
