Tennis icon Roger Federer - arguably the greatest player in the history of the sport - has announced his retirement.

The Swiss star had been sidelined for a year with a knee injury and said on social media his body would not allow him to return.

Federer won 20 slams in his career, including eight Wimbledon titles.
